Location of The Hilton Hawaiian Village Oahu

I think the location is ideal because you are away from the hustle/bustle and crowds of the heart of Waikiki yet still close enough to it to enjoy it as you like (about 10 minutes walking).

Take a trolley ($2), bus ride ($2.50) or cab if you don't feel like walking.

hilton hawaiian village oahu fountain

You are also at the gateway to Waikiki which is ideal for avoiding most of the traffic and pedestrian congestion of the main drag-especially useful for business travelers and those trying to get to the airport in a hurry via cab.

royal hawaiian shopping center

Walking distance to the start of the main drag of Waikiki on Kalakaua (10 minutes), 15 minutes to Ala Moana Shopping Center, The Hawaii Convention Center (15+ minutes) and Ala Moana Park and Ft. Derussy for jogs and strolls.

Towers at The Hilton Hawaiian Village Oahu

The Ali'i Tower

Ali'i (ah-LEE-ee) means royalty in the Hawaiian language.

hilton hawaiian village oahu corner suite

-Direct oceanfront: has the best, most amazing views and quick, direct access to the beach and the super-pool and Tropics Bar and Grill. This is a big plus in a resort of this side where I used to give out maps regularly to help people figure out where to go.

hilton hawaiian village oahu alii tower lobby

-Private: private concierge for this tower only, private pool and sauna on the 2nd floor facing the ocean and a private fitness center with rooms reserved for massage treatments. Celebrities have stayed in this tower. Also a private guest reception meaning that you can register for your room in the tower and not have to deal with lines at the front desk.

hilton hawaiian village oahu alii tower suite

-Perks: large rooms, welcome basket of tropical fruits upon arrival, bathrobes, mini-fridge, coffee and tea with a maker, MP3 compatible clock radio and flat screen tvs with Nintendo. You also get the extra cherry on top type of customer service.

The Rainbow Tower

800 oceanfront room tower dating back to 1965 this building is known for its signature mosaic rainbow design down the side.

hilton hawaiian village oahu rainbow tower

It is located in what I think is the nicest section of Waikiki beach because a) it's less crowded, b) it's the widest stretch of beach and c) you're down near the end of Waikiki beach which allows you to admire the curvature of the coastline view.

hilton hawaiian village oahu view

It's that signature postcard shot where you can see all of the buildings and sand with Diamond Head in the distance.

hilton hawaiian village oahu rainbow tower room

Recently renovated last year and has all new elevators and lobbies. Every single stitch of this building was turned over and upgraded and the results are nice. It now has a modern, contemporary feel.

The Tapa Tower

hilton hawaiian oahu village tapa suite

Near most of the shops and has its own conference center. This tower is popular with business and convention goers. The Tapa Tower Bar is downstairs adjacent to the pool and has nightly live musical entertainment.

Not oceanfront but some rooms have very nice ocean views. Large variety of rooms and suites. The business center and post office are located in the base of the Diamond Head tower as well. Good centralized location in the resort.

The Kalia Tower

hilton hawaiian village oahu kalia tower

315 room tower with its own guest registration. Also located on a corner of the 22 acre resort that is closest to the action in Waikiki so getting in and out of this tower will be easy. Ideal for the traveler on the go.

Also the Mandara Spa and the fitness center are located here on the 4th floor. A beautiful infinity edge pool with a mosaic flower motif is on the 3rd floor while Starbucks and a few stores are in the lobby.

ABC store is a quick 50 yrd dash out the door and a 24 hr diner good for cheap breakfast is across the street. It's the Wailana Coffee House. Several rooms here have ocean views too.

The Diamond Head Tower

hilton hawaiian village oahu diamond head tower room

Convenient central location in the resort with the business center, post office and Camp Penguin downstairs. Honestly, it's the least "resort-like" and has more of a business feel to it and is older. It's also quieter here sitting adjacent to a large lawn and there's a Starbucks downstairs and lots of stores to poke through.

Again its centralized location means you won't have to walk from one end of the resort wayyyyy down to the other and vice versa. Some rooms do have ocean views. They have some really nice suites though.

The Grand Waikikian

grand waikikian

Not officially part of the hotel but a "branch off" of the Hilton name much like Embassy Suites, The Plaza Hotel in New York or the Doubletree is Hilton Grand Vacations Club.

Built with their timeshare owners in mind you don't have to be an owner to stay there. You can rent the suites at different rates and still be able to enjoy the amenities of the hotel with the convenience and comfort of staying in a luxury condominium.

They're beautiful with granite countertops, full kitchens, some with stainless appliances and laundry in each apartment. The tower is called The Grand Waikikian.

The Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon

Renovated in 2007 by the Hilton Grand Vacation Club this 5 acre lagoon has fresh ocean water pumped into it and circulated 5x daily.

Named after famed Hawaiian waterman and Olympic swimmer Duke Kahanamoku it is the crown jewel in the Hilton's treasure chest. Sitting just inside of the ocean it is ideal for those who do not wish to swim in open water, children and those participating in mellow water activities.

The beach concession which is independently owned and operated will rent chairs, umbrellas and beach toys such as stand up paddles, kayaks, boogie boards and tubes.

The Paradise Pool is next door so it is especially ideal for families. The Lagoon and Rainbow towers sit right here.

hilton hawaiian village oahu

Surrounded by a walk way its depth ranges from shallow to about 12 feet in the middle. It is open to the public.

There is a waterfall in the middle and landscaping surrounding the area perimeter with benches placed at different points to sit and enjoy the scenery.

Wildlife & Gardens

22 acres of resort area means that there's plenty of room to incorporate some great gardens. There's the lawn in front of the wedding chappel and the super-lawn facing the lagoon and ocean.

hilton hawaiian village oahu swans

These 2 areas offer a great escape for some peace and quiet. Landscaped with wild ginger and other tropical plants and flowers they are very pretty.

Over 50 species of flora from the South Pacific and other parts of the world are incorporated into the design.

hilton hawaiian village oahu penguins

South African penguins, exotic birds, ducks, koi ponds, swans, turtles and fish live at the resort. They have regularly scheduled feedings of the fish and turtles that you can participate in.

Shopping at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Oahu

hilton hawaiian village oahu rainbow bazaar

The Rainbow Bazaar is a centralized location at the resort where many restaurants and shops are contained. With Asian inspired architecture you can get ice cream, sandwiches, grab something from the ABC store or just stroll around and peruse the many shops and boutiques.

There are over 90 shops dotted around the resort ranging from designer high end places like Louis Vuitton to everyday beachwear and surf shops.

There's also jewelry stores, Hawaiian-themed stores and kids stores. See the campus map for a complete list and specific locations.

hilton hawaiian village oahu shopping

Get used to the concept of the ABC store. They are literally on just about every corner in Waikiki.

I think there's 65 or something and the busiest one is at the Hilton. You can get sundries, snacks, clothes and liquor there.

Entertainment at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Oahu

Waikiki Starlight Luau

What I like about the luau: the best food by far, very good dancers and it's right there. The location is a plus in the sense that you don't have to commute to the west side or the north shore to see a luau which is an hour each way.

What I don't like about the luau is that it's on the roof of the parking garage. You can see the ocean but....After awhile you forget about it sort of.

Learn more about luaus on the island here. To check availability and pricing for the Waikiki Starlight Luau click the title link just above.

luau oahu fire dancer

Rockin Rainbow Revue-held Friday nights around the super-pool from 7:00-7:45pm it's a cute Hawaiian music and dance show with hula dancers, drums and tiki lights that culminates in live fireworks that are launched from the beach behind.

The fireworks go from 7:45-7:50pm. Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased at the Ali'i tower information desk on the sidewalk across from the pool until 6pm before showtime on Fridays.

hilton hawaiian village oahu entertainment

Nightly there's live entertainment from various well-known local vocal artists and musicians at Tropic's Bar and Grill which sits on the beach or at the Tapa Tower Bar on the main stage there.

Check for the most updated listing of who's performing that week when you arrive as this list changes often.

Restaurants at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Oahu

hilton hawaiian village oahu tropics

There's about 19 restaurants here. My top picks are Lappert's for ice cream, Round Table pizza for pizza, CJ's for breakfast, Benihana if doing a fixed menu including appetizer and desert, Tropic's Bar and Grill for pupus (appetizers) in the afternoon.

hilton hawaiian village oahu restaurant

Grab a table late afternoon on Friday's to watch the fireworks. It's oceanfront.

Go to Bali Steak and Seafood for a nice romantic dinner on the ocean. ABC store for quick snacks and beverages.

To mix it up for breakfast you can go to the Rainbow Lanai. Oceanfront open-air location and breakfast buffet.

Meetings, Events & Weddings

hilton hawaiian village oahu outdoor event

With over 150,000 sf of indoor and outdoor meeting space they can definitely accomodate large and small groups. Functions held oceanside on the great lawn are especially nice.

Many large multi-national corporations have their annual shindig here for the top performers that they want to acknowledge. Extensive catering services are available as well.

3 independent conference centers with ballroom and boardroom facilities. On site is a 24 hour business center and a post office. In-house audio-visual equipment and corporate incentives are offered.

hilton hawaiian village oahu wedding gazebo

Full service wedding planning services are available. One stop shopping here. You can get married in the chapel or gazebo that they have on-site and have your reception here as well no matter how big or small your party is.

Wellness at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Oahu

hilton hawaiian village oahu spa

Top-notch. 2 floors with 25 treatment rooms and an open-air lounge with steam room, sauna, whirlpool, chaise loungers, magazines and fruit-infused water.

Of course you get slippers and robes to use and are assigned a locker. Orchids are sprinkled around everywhere. I used to just go to the lounge and go from one station to another, resting inbetween on the loungers.

This is great in the evening before bedtime, especially on a drizzly night. It's super-quiet and all you hear is the rain drops outside which come in lightly through the open windows and mist you. I loved it.

hilton hawaiian village oahu fitness center

The spa is full service with hair, nails, massages and facials and specialty treatments with a Hawaiian and tropical inspired flair.

For example, the Lomi Lomi massage, warm lava stones and scrubs with ingredients like pikake flowers. The spa is on the same floor as the fitness center-the 3rd floor in the Kalia Tower.

Miscellaneous

Valet parking is $30 a day. Self-parking is available for $24 and there is plenty of it. You can rent a car from Hertz there and pay a pretty penny or walk to Alamo or Enterprise a block away. Enterprise will pick you up if you prefer.

hilton hawaiian village oahu lobby

If you take a shuttle service to the hotel from the airport you will be dropped off at the Tapa Tower bus depot and have to walk to the front lobby to check in or to your specific tower such as the Ali'i, Lagoon or Kalia if you know that information ahead of time.

Refer to the campus map here. Keep in mind that it is a considerable distance from the bus depot to the front desk but they have bellhops available.

Overall Pros and Cons

Pros:

-Free fireworks on the beach every Friday night at 7:45 pm

-The Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon

-One stop shopping-no need to go anywhere for anything. You can plop by the pool, lay on the beach, eat, shop, work and be entertained right here.

-GREAT FOR FAMILIES!!!!-5 pools including one with slides and waterfalls. The lagoon provides safe water fun for kids without worrying about the ocean and all the beach toys you could want are right here.

Also you don't have to go anywhere with the kids if you don't want to. You can feed them and entertain them easily right on campus.

There will be lots of other kids for them to play with as well. Camp penguin for kids makes this easier. Suites are available with full kitchens, living rooms, WII and laundry facilities as well. Very convenient.

-Lots of exotic wildlife and birds.

-2 live entertainment options nightly and the Starlight Luau.

-Good for those traveling on business especially if they are bringing family along while working. Close to the Hawaii Convention Center and downtown. About 8.5 miles from the airport.

hilton hawaiian village oahu sunset

Cons:

-Again one man's pleasure is another man's pain: It's large and can be very crowded and busy especially if at full capacity.

-Not cheap but good to fair for a hotel in Waikiki. Some things are worth the money and many are not, especially the restaurants but then again this is Waikiki. If you are traveling with a family then the convenience factor will probably help balance this out. Check out the special promotion just below to save money.

-The concierge service will probably ask you to attend the timeshare presentation that they have. Ok, somewhat fair game in Waikiki but when you have several of them spread throughout the hotel and each concierge doesn't know how many times you've been asked that day or week it can be annoying.

*Note: the Ali'i Tower concierge does not do this.

Overall the pluses far outweigh the minuses.
