Lanikai Beach Hawaii
#1 Beach on Oahu

Lanikai beach Hawaii is truly one of the most special and beautiful places on the island. Flanked by the Mokulua Islands it is truly a picturesque place to be.

It is one of my favorite beaches on the island. With white powdery sand, beachfront cottages & estates I think it is not to be missed!

Location

Lanikai is the place to go if you really want to escape it all but have conveniences nearby. It's the best of both worlds because it's like being on an outer island but with city conveniences nearby.

Stores and restaurants are only a short 5-10 minute drive or bicycle ride away. If you want a trip to the "big city" of Honolulu then that is only 35-45 minutes or 10 miles away. A jogging path and main road takes you on a circular route around the community.

Kailua and Lanikai are adjacent to each other so both places can be easily enjoyed. You must go through Kailua in order to access Lanikai and all of the area's services are located here in places such as the Kailua Town Center and Kailua Shopping Center.

Try going down one of the beach access paths between houses to find a similar spot and more privacy.

Not only do you have Lanikai beach but you have Kailua stretching for over a mile to enjoy too.

Kayakers prepare their gear for an outing. This is one of the more popular access paths that are found tucked between houses.

Look for signs like this beside beach front houses. This is how you get to the beach. There are about 5.

Accomodations

Beach shacks and cottages in the Hawaiian plantation and "gingerbread" style are common here.

Large estates, compounds and hillside homes with stunning views of the Mokuluas (the Moks) are available too.

Celebrities such as John Travolta have owned homes here and Paul Mitchell still maintains an estate.

There are no hotels but plenty of vacation rentals to choose from. Most require a minimum 2 night stay.

Book early because popular places go fast with repeat clientele who will book a year in advance. Accomodations range from tucked away studios to large luxurious oceanfront villas.

Activities

Area activities include kayaking, wind surfing, surfing and snorkeling. Beach bum also rates high on the list with long stretches of beach to enjoy. The sand is very soft, white and powdery.

Surfing is technically on the list but usually isn't that great to be honest. It tends to be small, choppy and windy but is doable at times.

Bicycle rentals are available as well. I think the best way to experience all of this is with the Go Oahu card because you can kayak, snorkel, bike, have lunch and hang out at the beach for 1 set price. If staying in Waikiki schedule a pick up or choose the FREE car rental bonus available with passes of at least 3 days or more.

Restaurants & Shopping

My fave restaurants in the area include Teddy's Bigger Burgers, Maui Tacos, Lanikai Juice, Buona Sera Italian and Orange Grove Frozen Yogurt. Most can be found in the Kailua Town Center.

There's now a new Whole Foods Market and I like a place called Down to Earth which is great for healthy food on the go and is less expensive.

For toiletries go to Long's (CVS owned) and for basic clothing go to Macy's. There's no need to go into Honolulu to go shopping unless you just want to hit up a major mall. Kailua has everything you'll need.

Local boutiques and surf shops are abundant and tucked into every little nook and cranny.
