Moana Surfrider Waikiki

The Moana Surfrider Waikiki is a historic direct, oceanfront hotel that was the one first built in Waikiki in 1901. It's GREAT location with a classic front porch and wooden rocking chairs hallows back to a time of old world elegance and charm.

This classic looking hotel takes one back to the plantation days and when Hawaii was forbidden to all but for the very wealthiest who could afford to travel here.

As soon as you arrive and see the old wooden rocking chairs on the large front porch and the chandeliers and large area rugs on the wooden floors you almost expect the lady of the manor to come and greet you herself with a glass of lemonade.

The vibe is very romantic and there is a lot of charm and atmosphere. In the "backyard" there is a 100 year old Banyan tree shadowing the pool and sundeck which overlook the Pacific Ocean.

There are 793 rooms divided amongst 3 buildings and the Moana Surfrider has all of the hotel basics you'd expect: pool, fitness center, 24 hour business center, kid's activities, restaurants, laundry facilities, a spa, wedding services and a breakfast buffet for a fee.

Daily newspapers are complimentary in the lobby.

Other amenities include a sauna, a ballroom, exhibit space, one meeting room, beach umbrella rentals, express check-out and valet and self-parking.

Other notable options are the afternoon tea service and Polynesian music and dance show called Creation.

Pros:

-Phenomenal location literally in the heart of everthing. Sits ON Waikiki Beach, shopping, restaurants and activities galore are at your fingertips.
-Distinctive architechtural and historical design. No other hotel looks like this. Being able to sit on the porch in rocking chairs and people watch people on the main drag is nice.
-Great for couples; very romantic.

Cons:

-Smaller rooms and smallish pool. This is an older hotel built when things weren't constructed to our modern day super-size tastes.

HOWEVER, the beach is RIGHT THERE. Just walk a few footsteps and chill next to the ocean. For a bigger room opt for a room in one of the newer constructed towers.

-Noisy, busy location in the heart of everything. The plus is kind of a minus.

The hotel itself seems reasonable in terms of activity level but you can tell that Waikiki literally sprang up around it.

While you might imagine lounging sleepily and lazily on the veranda in one of the rocking chairs and enjoying tropical breezes you will have the company of crowds of people walking by at the end of the driveway on the sidewalk.

Waikiki is a busy, busy place. Get an oceanfront room on a high floor for that type of peace and quiet.

Rooms

moana surfrider waikiki view

Rooms are split amongst 3 buildings, the historic low-rise building and 2 more modern towers. Rooms in the historic wing are smaller and therefore tend to be cheaper.

If you seek more space then a room in one of the newer towers would be best. It's best to choose a floor above the 10th floor if possible for better views.

Be cautious that if you choose a room facing the main drag of Kalakaua then the noise will be much greater there.

Rooms in the Banyan building don't have balconies but the large windows do open. Tower building rooms have furnished balconies and the Diamond wing rooms hae French balconies.

All rooms come with a flat screen tv, high speed wired internet for a fee, safes, premium bedding, turndown service, a mini-fridge and a coffee and teamaker.

Slippers and a newspaper are complimentary.
