The Royal Hawaiian Luau

the royal hawaiian luau

The Royal Hawaiian Luau is a treat that is not to be missed. If you don't want to be part of a large, commercial luau with a lot of corny jokes, bad food and rehashed "tricks" then this luau is for you. The luau is 1st class and 5 star with food sure to satisfy the toughest critics and unlimited alcohol. It is located in Waikiki which is extremely convenient thus eliminating the need to travel over an hour to most other luaus on the island. In one word: classy.

There are activities to observe demonstrating various aspects of ancient Hawaiian culture such as making clothes and food production. About 4-5 dancers do this during the cocktail hour prior to the show. Dinner and show programs are given out to follow. This along with the little keepsake gift that each guest is given make nice souvenirs.

It is located at the luxurious The Royal Hawaiian Luau in central Waikiki. The Royal Hawaiian hotel is the famous pink hotel that is part of every picture postcard shot of Waikiki. A landmark hotel with historic Spanish architectural details reminiscent of the colonial days it is a beautiful throwback in time. You'll feel like a Conde Nast type of traveler enjoying your vacation while walking around here. The address is 2259 Kalakaua Ave, Honolulu, HI 96815.

The Food

Bar None! The Royal Hawaiian is a 5 star hotel and the quality of the food reflects this. It is beautifully presented and served as if eating at a fine dining restaurant. There are no buffet lines as everything is brought to you and there is unlimited alcohol to drink.

The dessert is a pink heart with a tropical fruit infused sauce drizzled on the plate. It is a signature dish here that is unique to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel known for its pink color and decor. I went around Christmas time and the hallways were decorated with fresh cut trees and pink trimmings. It smelled yummy and felt extremely festive.

The Show

I love the show here and it is not short on drama. Even though I feel like I've seen a million luaus this one is special to me. With its oceanfront setting on the lawn with Diamond Head and Waikiki beach as the backdrop it is classic Hawaii at its best.

You definitely feel a part of history as you watch the show which demonstrates the elements of hula throughout the ages.

It starts with the Royal Hawaiian monarchy and goes through World War II complete with boogey woogey girls singing up to modern hula today.

Sitting oceanside at the oldest hotel in Waikiki that is a landmark today with its incredible architecture it feels just right.

The Royal Hawaiian Luau Vs Other Luaus

-LOCATION!!! Oceanside on the front lawn with perfect Diamond Head views & the beach
-Food Quality-PERFECT for foodies
-Intimate setting: there aren't hundreds of people there
-Unlimited alcohol
-Rain back up plan: it's moved inside if it rains or the grass is too wet. That happened the day I went & took these pictures but I still had a blast
-Boogey woogey girls,
beautiful costumes
-Historical perspective of hula integrated into the show

the royal hawaiian luau monarchy

-No Imu Ceremony (removing the pig from underground oven & blessing it)
-Not suited for very young children (my opinion)
