The Ala Moana Hotel in Honolulu is what is known as a condotel. That basically means that they're condominium units in a hotel setting. You have the benefits of a condo but with the ammenities and service of a hotel.

I've been in several units there because I know of a couple of the owners. One of them manages a lot of units and they look like hotel rooms to me but with kitchenettes and a large, long vanity countertop in the bathroom which is nice.

This is a mixed use property similar to the Ilikai Hotel except no one really lives there for long. I've known of military businessmen who've stayed there for an extended periods of time.

I wouldn't recommend it for long because it wouldn't be comfortable due to the fact that almost none of the units have a sink in the kitchenette area. If you'll be eating out primarily and aren't interested in serious cooking then it's fine.

So the building breakdown is part of it is privately owned and rented out by private owners or property managers they've hired. Part of it privately owned and rented out by the management company on site operated by the hotel and part of it is just straight hotel rooms.

One of the nice ammenities at the hotel is the large sundeck and pool on the 3rd floor. It is positioned in such a way that you always have sun throughout the day from early morning until sunset.

The water stays warm and you can work on that tan uninterrupted. A modern fitness center is adjacent. One bummer is that there is not hot tub.

The rooms are equipped with kitchenettes and mini-fridges, the taller kind. You have an actual counter work space with a microwave and a coffeemaker. Some unit owners may have even placed a toaster or hot plate there for your convenience.

The main area of the room has a desk, flat screen tv and 1 or 2 beds depending on what you requested. They're very simple, nice rooms, nothing extravagant but it's not old and unappealing either. Laundry facilities and vending machines are installed throughout the hotel on different floors.

Typical bathroom. Very modern and updated.

Decorated, upgraded suite available. Mountain view with great breezes.

The views here can be quite nice too as you have an unobstructed ocean view that spans wide enough for miles to see downtown and capture the city lights as well. T

his all depends on which type of room you book but most of them should offer some nice city views and those of the Hawaii Convention Center and the beautiful green mountains in the distance.

If you are facing the ocean then on Friday nights at 7:45pm you will be able to see the fireworks that take place at the Hilton nearby. You can sit on your room lanai and enjoy the show.

The Cons:

-Not right on the beach.

-10-15 minute walk to the beach at Ala Moana beach park. Not the "ideal" Hawaiian beach but it's still pretty. The water is on the murkier side in some sections.

-I'd say it's a 20-25 minute walk to get to the beach in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village which eventually extends down to Waikiki beach.

It's not a big deal really. Hopefully you'll rent a car for 2-3 days and get out of Waikiki and explore some really nice beaches like those that can be found on the north shore and in Kailua.

You're saving so much money by staying here I say take advantage and use the money for other things you want to do. Just be clear on what you're getting if you decide to stay here. It has been remodeled and updated. It's not a hole, it's nice and it's convenient.
