Hale Koa Hotel Honolulu
Best Military Hotel Deal

The Hale Koa Hotel Honolulu is a direct oceanfront 72 acre property on the widest, nicest stretch of Waikiki beach offering full amenities at less than half the price of neighboring hotels.

With the Hilton Hawaiian village on the left and The Trump hotel on the right this hotel is a STEAL if you are military. I wouldn't spend the extra money to stay elsewhere if I could stay here. It's not luxury or fancy but the value for the dollar is definitely there.

Location & General Info

hale koa hotel honolulu pool

This is an ideal location at the western or "Ewa" side of Waikiki because you will avoid most of the traffic congestion before it gets really bad in the heart of Waikiki.

This is desirable if you are transferring in or out of Hawaii and still have to commute.

Ft Shafter-11 miles

Hickam-12 miles

Pearl Harbor-12 miles

MCBH (Kaneohe)-18 miles

Wheeler-22 miles

Schofield-23 miles

Commuting times are a whole other thing however. Honolulu's traffic sucks to be quite honest so if you can avoid peak travel times (6:30-8:30am & 3:15-5:30pm) you'll cruise right along. Going against the flow of traffic helps immensely too which you'll be doing if heading out to one of the bases.

Waikiki Location

In terms of walking around Waikiki I would say you are 7-10 minutes from the start of the main drag, Kalakaua (ka-la-COW-wa) depending on how fast you walk. There you will find everything from designer stores, restaurants and more nightlife.

There's also the Waikiki Trade Center (souvenirs, knickknacks & jewelry) and The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. The country's largest outdoor mall, Ala Moana Shopping Center is a 20 minute walk in the opposite direction heading towards the airport.

Another thing you can do is go to the Hilton Hawaiian Village next door. The 5 acre Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon is open to the public. Also walk around and enjoy their gardens and wildlife.

They have swans and South African penguins and over 90 shops and 18 restaurants. The Atlantis Submarine is also located about 100 yds down the beach in front of the Hilton.

As far as booking activities I would go through the tour and travel desk there in the hotel if they are giving you military pricing or go thru the NEX at Pearl Harbor (808-422-2257, MWR Tickets & Tours) although you have to be in person at the NEX to make arrangements.

If you know the specific activities you want to do you can call up the vendors directly and tell them you are military. You will save a LOT of money. General activity desks won't honor that for you and charge much higher prices.

You can almost get the wholesale prices on things. I know because I used to work in the activity business. Here is a list of activity prices for military.

In fact, get in the habit of looking for military discounts island wide because many places give a discount of 10% or more including the movie theaters. You can save a lot by being military in Hawaii but you must have your military ID with you at all times so that you can show it.

An example is a place I like to go for breakfast on the other side of Ft DeRussy park across the street called Eggs n Things which gives a 10% military discount.

hale koa hotel honolulu room

Rooms are divided amongst 2 towers, the Ilima Tower and the Maile Tower. Cost is based upon your rank and the type of room that you desire. As of the time of this writing in spring 2012 prices range from $91-$289.

That is CHEAP!!!!!!!! You'll pay twice that amount at neighboring hotels, especially those that are oceanfront. Book well out in advance, at least 6 months if you can. If they can't accomodate you then they have existing arrangements with neighboring hotels to place you.

There are 2 restaurants on site, snack bars and a couple of bars. On Sundays they have a champagne Sunday brunch with salads, omelettes, meats, etc. There are 2 dinner shows: The Hale Koa luau and the Magic in Paradise Show which is a Polynesian theme song and dance show.

You also have the option of High & Right Comedy Night for entertainment. On Friday nights at 7:45pm there are fireworks on the beach in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village next door.

It lasts for 5 minutes and is the conclusion to a Polynesian dance show that they put on around their pool but people come from everywhere to watch the fireworks.
