Oahu Horseback Riding

Oahu horseback riding offers some great options if you enjoy the company of our equestrine friends. First of all you cango riding on the beach, in the mountains or through gorgeous valleys. Different parts of the island offer different types of experiences so you'll have to choose.

Be warned of a couple of things though: The companies that offer horseback rides commercially won't allow you to go riding all wild and haywire galloping throughout the woods like Paul Revere. The rides are controlled and set at a steady pace.

Also, some companies deliberately choose horses that are extremely mellow or older in order to ensure a quiet experience. This may be a plus or a minus to some riders. Think from their perspective: liability.

Oahu Horseback Riding: Windward Side

The windward side of the island offers some of the most spectacular scenery on island for horseback riding. With rugged, jagged mountain cliffs and green valleys that go on for miles and miles this is often the first choice for people seeking to be outdoors in a beautiful environment.

Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch is THE place to go for horseback riding on this part of the island. Aside from the beauty the environment is unique because this also happens to be one of the film locations for many popular movies and television shows such as Lost, Jurassic Park, Godzilla and Battleship.

As you ride you get to go past all of these locations (which are marked and labeled) and feel as if you've either gone back in time yourself or are part of some of the famous scenes in cinematic history.

There is also a very spiritual quality to Kaaawa valley and beautiful views all the way to the ocean can be seen as well as Chinaman's hat. The downside: I've heard some horse enthusiasts complain that there wasn't enough adrenaline factor in these horses.

If you really want to RIDE then these horses aren't for you. They're reallllly mellow and older and the ride is more of a stroll through the valley.

You also ride in a line formation and much of it is on dirt roads and manicured trails. If you are okay with experiencing the beauty of the valley while being on a horse then this is a good choice but if you want it to be about riding more then this is not.

During the 1 hour ride you see the southern half of the ranch with great views of Chinaman's Hat. During the 2 hour there is the opportunity to view the northern half of the ranch and go much deeper into the valley.

Both tours include riding past World War II bunkers and incredible views of the ocean and mountains.

You must be at least 10 years old, 4'6" tall and under 230 lbs. If you need transportation they will not pick you up if you ONLY doing horseback riding. In order to get transportation you need to sign up for a half day or full day package.

The rest of your time there includes doing another activity and includes lunch. Pickup leaves early from Waikiki beginning at about 7:00 am. If you have your own transportation then you are expected to arrive and check in 30 minutes prior.

Oahu Horseback Riding: North Shore

The north shore for horseback riding offers a few good choices spanning all the way from Mokuleia and beyond. All are better choices for those interested in more of a riding experience.

None are going to be exclusive oceanfront rides but if you want a taste of being more out in the country then these are good choices. The part that will feel Hawaiian to you is the ocean part but most don't have the dramatic backdrop of the mountains that give it that "classic" feel.

Happy Trails

Happy Trails offers countryside tours on the north shore that either 1.5 or 2 hours each. The terrain includes ranch grounds, orchards, mountains and ocean views.

All tours include a lesson and orientation lasting about 15 minutes. They are open daily from 8 am- 5 pm. Check in is 15 minutes prior and ride times are 9:00 am- 11:00 am, 11:30 am-1:00 pm and 1:30 pm-3:00 pm.

A later time may be available with prior arrangement. Minimum age is 6 years old with a maximum weight of 235 lbs. Address is 59-231 Pupukea Road, Haleiwa, HI 96712. Transportation is not available.

Hawaii Polo Club

The Hawaii Polo club is probably going to offer the most oceanfront riding than the other companies because they are located on the ocean in Mokuleia.

The rides do have a mixture of trail and forest riding but there is the opportunity to ride with the ocean being RIGHT there. If doing this in the winter this is great because the surf will be crashing right up alongside you.

They are a USPA Polo Club with100 acres and horses that are of professional quality. Rides are 1.5 hours long and available on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 1:00 and 3:00 pm.

There is a minimum age of 8 and a maximum weight of 250 lbs. Group, semi-private and private rides are available. Transportation is not available. You will need a rental car.
