Paradise Cove Luau Oahu

Paradise Cove luau on Oahu is located on the west side of the island in the Ko'Olina resort area. Held on the beach at sunset this is the favorite luau of most locals.

It has the classic feel of a luau in Hawaii that you see on tv with the tiki torches, fire dancers and dancers. It's very scenic with a lagoon and is perfectly positioned to face the sun as it sets over the ocean.

There is a lagoon for canoe rides, arts and crafts and a hukilau. Hukilau is when traditional Hawaiian activities are performed such as fishing via throwing/casting a net into the ocean and climbing a coconut tree.

They have a young man who climbs up what seems to be 2-3 stories up a coconut tree and then throws orchid flowers over the crowd below. It's corny but nice.

There are lots of arts and crafts activities as well. For the ladies I suggest going to the flower table where you can make a haku for yourself.

This is a headband made out of flowers and palm leaves. It looks great with your lei and a tropical drink in your hand. Take a picture down by the beach like this.

There is also an Imu ceremony on the grounds. This is where the pig is taken out of the ground after cooking for hours and blessed.

Paradise Cove luau has a special area for this where you can sit down and watch this. There is a live band and dancers during this part as well.

Upon entering the grounds everyone gets a mai tai (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) and your photograph is taken with a couple of dancers.

At the end of the evening you have the option to purchase it unless it is included with your package.

Paradise Cove Luau Menu

Traditional Hawaiian food such as Kalua pork, Lomi Lomi salmon and poi. There is also chicken, fish, salad, rice, rolls, macaroni salad, fruit and dessert. Honestly the food is just ok.

Vegetarian meals can be ordered with advance notice of 2-3 days but I think a vegetarian can get by with what's on the buffet.

Don't go there expecting to have a gourmet feast. It's more about the experience of being at a luau on the beach in Hawaii-tiki torches, sexy dancers, music, fire dancers, etc.

Keep that in mind but I personally went back for seconds on some things.

What's a premium drink vs. a standard drink?

A premiuim drink has a higher quality, brand name vodka in it. A standard drink uses a generic brand so it's less strong. In general don't expect to get drunk off of these drinks.

Paradise Cove and most luaus on the island don't put more than a shot in the drinks but exercise caution regardless and don't drink and drive.

How long is a luau?

Generally 3 hours. The first hour is spent getting drinks, hanging out, watching the hukilau ceremony, the Imu ceremony and doing or watching/observing arts and crafts.

They have shopping available too where tropical inspired jewelry, hand-carved items and clothing can be purchased. The 2nd hour is for dinner and the last hour is the show.

Paradise Cove luau starts at 5:00 and ends at approximately 8:00pm. The drive back to Waikiki is approximately 45 minutes.

If you are driving out I suggest arriving by 4:30 pm to beat the tour buses that will be pulling up at about 4:45 pm. Get your tickets from the Will Call window and an early spot in line when the gates open.

How do I get there?

If driving take H-1 expressway until it ends just about and come off at the KoOlina exit. It takes about 45 minutes WITHOUT traffic from Waikiki.

If traveling during the week you'll get to join everybody during the rush hour commute home and therefore allow about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1.5 hours one way. The exact address is 92-1089 Aliinui Drive, Kapolei, HI 96707.

Parking is free. Upon entering the Ko'Olina resort area they are the first turn to the right past the security guard at the resort entrance.

Just tell him/her that you are going there. You can see a sign on the building in the parking lot.

If you need transportation Paradise Cove offers it. It's basically an extra $14 added on to your package. They make major stops throughout Waikiki at a hotel near you and pickups begin about 3:30pm.

How do I dress?

Comfortably! It's not necessary to get dressed up although most tourists do dress up a little with women donning an island like dress. Shorts and t-shirts are fine too.

I would choose flip-flops for shoes because it is held on the beach in the sand.

Also, it can get a little chilly on the beach at night so I suggest taking a light coverup or sweatshirt to wrap around your waist and put on if need be.
