Waikiki Restaurants

I don't attempt to name and list all of the Waikiki restaurants but here is a listing of the most common ones. As far as Hawaiian food goes there really aren't any places in Waikiki that specialize in just local cuisine.

That would be more of a hole in the wall, greasy spoon type of place. However, many do what they call a Hawaiian or Pacific Rim fusion type of cuisine. They use local ingredients and flavors. The same goes for seafood.

Places that serve steak also have seafood offerings particularly local fish such as ahi or mahi mahi. Other local touches will come into play with many dishes being offered with rice, tropical fruit based sauces and desserts and fresh flowers such as orchids decorating the plates.

Most places do have the tourist consumer in mind but don't let that deter you from trying some of these restaurants. The food is very good regardless.

beachhouse waikiki at the moana surfrider

Duke's-Steak, seafood and island fusion cuisine. Casual, music and named after famed waterman Duke Kahanamoku. Outrigger Waikiki hotel

Ocean House-Oceanfront, great views of Diamond Head, tikiki torches, nice for a more upscale couple's dinner with lots of ambience.

Beach House-Moana Surfrider; very upscale. Lots of wood and tropical plantation inspired decor. Oceanfront.

Tiki's-Live music nightly and ocean views from across the street. Mostly outdoor dining, casual island feel. Tshirts are ok here and the menu can be seen here.

Tropics-On the beach and I prefer it for lunch and happy hour time; live music, great if you want to be outside and people watch, located at The Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Special Occasion

Top of Waikiki-revolving restaurant atop a high rise with 350 degree views. Celebrating a wedding anniversary, want to propose or just have a really nice night out-then this is a good choice.

Michel's-French cuisine. Oceanfront in the gold coast about a 10 minute walk away from the hoopla of Waikiki at The Colony Surf Waikiki.

Alan Wong's-Fine dining Hawaiian regional cuisine. Not in Waikiki but many people make the trip into Honolulu. He has another location called The Pineapple Room at Nordstrom's at Ala Moana Shopping Center.

La Mer-French, upscale and located in the Halekulani 5 star resort. Dress code required.

Orchids-Pacific fusion, located inside the Halekulani resort with direct ocean views. "Casual elegance" is the vibe here.

Sarrento's-Italian fantastic views from very high floor; Ilikai hotel. Has a formal feel and if you like jazz and piano then you'll probably like it here. There's an exterior elevator facing out to the ocean that takes you straight up there.

Morimoto's-If you're an Iron Chef fan then you'll dig this restaurant owned by Iron Chef star Masaharu Morimoto. Lot's of chic sushi dishes in a beautiful, hip environment. Open air with harbor views located by the pool at The Modern hotel.

Doraku's- Located at the Royal Hawaiian Center and highly praised by hardcore sushi enthusiasts. Moderately priced. It's not a typical hole in the wall type of sushi restaurant but has all of the ambiance and flair you'd expect in a Waikiki restaurant located in the heart of the upscale shopping district.

Steak & Seafood

Hy's-My coworker is a true carnivore through & through & LOVES this place for steak. It's his favorite. The decor is reminiscent of a historical steakhouse in Chicago or New York with leather seats, wood paneling and waiters in tuxedos.

Roy's-Very good with a good reputation. No views and not oceanfront but the food and service are excellent. The decor is more on the simple, minimalist tropical side. Lewers St at The Embassy Suites.

Ruth's Chris-Chain restaurant for steak. Consistent high quality that you expect. Lewers St at The Embassy Suites.

Wolfgang's-Steakhouse located at The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center

Taormina-really upscale

Cheesecake Factory-Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center; go hungry-ginormous portions
Buca di Beppo-not right in Waikiki but worth a 10 minute cab ride to Ward Center. Perfect for ordering large dishes to share and serve family style. Italian that makes Cheesecake Factory's portions look almost wimpy. HUGE salads for those who primarily want that for dinner.
Cheeseburger Waikiki-Lewers St. and Kalakaua avenue
Duke's-Outrigger Waikiki hotel

Oceanarium-has a huge 2 story aquarium in the Pacific Beach hotel; seafood and sushi buffet
